Did You Know?
If you’re an author and looking to publish, how do you know which route to go? Today, there are three major ways to publish: traditional, self, and hybrid.
In traditional publishing a publishing house takes over your book’s rights and oversees the whole process — from editing to distribution. You get to take home a share of the royalties. However, finding a traditional publisher who is willing to take on your book can be difficult. If you can tolerate potentially multiple rejections from agents and publishers, this might be the route for you.
In self-publishing you manage all the non-writing tasks like editing or marketing on your own (or by hiring freelancers to help you). You get to keep 30-70% of the profits, and keep all creative control over every aspect of your book. Marketing is tough and, generally, there is less exposure with retailers than traditional publishing, however you retain full control.
Hybrid publishers offer assistance for a fee. These companies offer similar services at different prices, can give mentorship, and even help with an Amazon set-up. It is wise to research a few before picking which publisher to go with. While not as selective as traditional publishers, they do take a portion of the royalties.
